1985 Year Group Reunion on 16th September 2023 in Saffron Walden

Many thanks to Frank Schirmacher YG85 for organising an exceptionally popular reunion which took place on Saturday 16th September 2023 in the afternoon at the Friends’ Meeting House and then in the evening at the Cross Keys and Railway Arms in Saffron Walden.About 60 Old Scholars attended, mainly those the 85 year group but other year groups were represented especially from the 83 and 89 year groups. We were also pleased that a number of staff were able to attend including Tessa Brown, Ellie Parry, John Capper, Mike Collins and Vanessa Behrendt.Most of the Old Scholars lived not far from Walden but some travelled from Wales, London, Hereford, Oxford, Leicester, Maidenhead and even Germany.Frank went to a lot of trouble to print out and display about 200 photos of scholars and the school in the early 80s which you can see in some of the photos below. The success of this reunion largely followed from Frank’s exceptional enthusiasm and creation of his ‘FSSW reunion’ Facebook page which has 183 members now, and which featured many of the photos of school life that he took during his time at school. Many of these photos also appeared on the Old Scholars’ Facebook page - Friends' School Old Scholars – which has over a thousand members to date.Copies of the three main history books of the school were available to take away free of charge namely, ‘The School on the Hill’ 2002, John Wood’s ‘A Hundred Years at Saffron Walden’ 1979 and David Bolam’s ‘Unbroken Community’ 1952.
