John Gillett (Staff 1960-76)
15 November 2021
Old Scholars will be saddened to hear the news of the death of John Gillett (Staff 1960-76). John died on 8th November at the age of 89 peacefully at home after a short illness. John taught at Friends' School from 1960-1976 and was both Friends' and Gibson House Boys' House Master, as well as Head of English. He was a keen Scout as well and Old Scholars will remember walking the Penine way with John.

This news comes very soon after the death of Denby Allen (Staff 1963-1991), which John was very saddened by and which rekindled many memories of his time at Friends' and others.

Those who knew John are invited to his burial at Aldestrop Church on 24th November at 2pm. Dress warmly and comfortably, and all are welcome to the buffet in the Village Hall afterwards.

There is also a Quaker Meeting to be held on the 28th November at 10:30am at Sibford Meeting.

Judith Gillett (YG 1975) writes that: "It maybe you would like to recall John but you are very busy and/or ceremonies aren't for you, we will have a book in which stories and memories and photos of/ about John can be put, or you can send an email to me and I will put it in!" If you would like to do so, please email: davidjohngillett@gmail.com

On 2nd May 2022, on what would have been his ninetieth birthday, an oak tree will be planted. The site and time are to be agreed still. John loved trees and Judith is going to grow some acorns from the village medieval oak in preparation. She requests that you ask her if you would like to join this.
