Peter Cutler (Staff 1966-72)
30 July 2020
We are very sad to have heard of the death of Peter James Cutler, who was a member of staff at Friends' School Saffron Walden between 1966 and 1972. Peter passed away peacefully at Addenbrooke's Hospital on 30th July, aged 86.

A linguisit, he taught both French and Latin at the school. I happened to grow up on the same street on which Peter lived, and my mother, Biddy Vousden (YG 1972) was taught French by him. She, like many of his former pupils, was very fond of him - he used to invent nicknames for students based on translations of their names, and I am told he could still remember them when he happened to be looking through photos of Biddy's year group with her many years later. Living not too far from the school, Peter remained associated with Friends' after retiring and would often come to Friends' and Families Day.

Peter was also a steam train enthusiast and a lover of classical and light music, and cats. There will not be a formal funeral service. He has donated his body to medical science, so that he can continue educating posthumously.

Peter will be greatly missed by his family, former pupils and neighbours. He is survived by his beloved cat, Brindle Puddy Mark II.

In the main photo, Peter is third from the left. The photo is from a reunion of former pupils from Earls Colne Grammar School.

The second photo (below) is cropped from the 1968 Whole School Photo. Peter is the teacher wearing glasses in the centre.
